New Trier’s Science Olympiad Team Captures State Championship

New Trier High School has recently been crowned state champions of the Science Olympiad after an impressive performance on Saturday, April 20, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This marks their return to the national finals at Michigan State University in East Lansing since 2018.

The Science Olympiad tournaments feature teams of 15 students competing in 23 different events that test their knowledge and skills in a range of scientific disciplines. Teams are ranked based on their performance in each event, with the team with the lowest overall score emerging as the winner.

New Trier’s strong showing during the state championships saw them secure first place in eight events and second place in five others, resulting in a total team score of 84 points. This was just two points ahead of runner-up Stevenson High School, making it a close competition.

Individual students also shone at the competition, with many earning medals for their outstanding performances. Junior Malachi Noel led the way by contributing to four first-place teams, followed closely by Vivian Chen with three first-place events. Other standout students included Prashu Rao, Tiana Wu, Kevin Huang, Varun Murali, and Stephen Zhao, each contributing to two first-place finishes.

New Trier’s journey to the state championships began at the regional tournament on March 9 at Oakton College, where they won an astounding 18 out of 23 events. This commanding performance helped them secure a first-place team finish and advance to the state level of competition.

The success of New Trier’s science Olympiad team is supported by funding from the New Trier Educational Foundation. As an independent newspaper, The Record relies on reader support to continue providing responsible local journalism. In conclusion, New Trier High School has shown remarkable talent and dedication in this year’s Science Olympiad tournaments and has secured their place as state champions once again. Their success is not only a testament to their hard work but also highlights the importance of supporting local education initiatives like this one through funding from nonprofit foundations like New Trier Educational Foundation.

Their triumphant victory marks another milestone for this exceptional school community and serves as an inspiration for future generations of scientists and innovators who will continue pushing boundaries and making groundbreaking discoveries for years to come.
