Peter Cat Recording Co. has announced the release of their new album, “Beta,” which will be available on August 9 through Muddy Water. The band’s first single from the album will be released on May 16, followed by a headlining tour that begins in August. Prior to their headlining dates, Peter Cat will join Khruangbin on tour before embarking on a U.S., U.K., and Europe tour, followed by dates in India.
Peter Cat shared a teaser of the album on Instagram, featuring an edible arrangement of watermelon slices with the album title spelled out in letters made from the fruit. According to the band, “Beta” is a collection of stories about the future told as if they were 50 years in the past, helping to make sense of our present world. This upcoming album is their first release since 2019’s “Bismillah.”
The band chose the title “Beta” from a list of five potential names after drummer Karan Singh’s six-month-old son randomly selected it during a game of musical chairs. The word “Beta” means “child” in Hindi. Produced by Suryakant Sawhney, Kartik Pillai, and Dhruv Bhola, “Beta” promises to be a unique blend of indie, bossa nova, jazz, psychedelic genres and more. Peter Cat Recording Co.’s music draws heavily from crooner music as showcased in their previous album “Bismillah.”
In an interview with Variety in April 2023, Sawhney discussed how singing in crooner music can be emotionally powerful and has masculine appeal. The band’s music captures a sense of grime and honesty that draws from older generations of crooner singers.
