The iconic Golden Ball trophy that legendary Argentinian soccer player Diego Maradona won at the 1986 FIFA World Cup is set to be auctioned off in June by Aguttes, a renowned auction house in France. On June 6th, the late soccer legend’s Golden Ball will be put up for sale with an estimated selling price of “millions” of dollars. According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Maradona’s Golden Ball had previously been stolen but was discovered among various trophy lots in an auction room.
Maradona, who passed away at the age of 60 in 2020, is widely recognized as one of the greatest soccer players of all time alongside Pelé, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo. His most notable achievement came in 1986 when he led Argentina to their second World Cup victory, scoring five goals and earning the Golden Ball for the most outstanding player.
Although Maradona’s Golden Ball was stolen, Aguttes was able to verify its authenticity after it was recovered. This upcoming auction on June 6th will mark the first time that a FIFA World Cup Golden Ball has ever been sold at an auction.
