In the last few hours, the Chinese authorities have reported 48 deaths and 30 injuries following a tragic accident on the Meizhou-Dabu highway in southern China. The incident occurred around 02:10 local time, affecting an area of approximately 184.3 square meters where 24 vehicles were trapped. Fortunately, no large vehicles or dangerous chemicals were involved in the accident, according to local officials.
Rescue efforts are ongoing and involve over 500 people working tirelessly to free all trapped vehicles and recover the bodies of the victims. The 30 injured individuals have been taken to nearby hospitals and are currently out of danger. However, investigations into the cause of the collapse are still underway, with suspicions that heavy rains in the region in recent days may have played a role.
This unfortunate event is just one of several infrastructure-related accidents that have occurred in China in recent months. In December, three people died and four were injured when a section of a highway collapsed in Inner Mongolia. The Chinese authorities are working diligently to investigate the cause of this latest collapse and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
