In a stunning turn of events, 17-year-old Gukesh from Chennai has emerged victorious in the prestigious Candidates tournament held in Toronto. This tournament was aimed at selecting the challenger to the world champion, but the venue for the upcoming contest has not been confirmed yet.
Gukesh’s victory is all the more remarkable considering he faced off against some of the most established players in the game, including Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, and Ian Nepomniachtchi. Despite their experience and success, Gukesh managed to secure his place as the youngest ever winner of this event.
With just one round remaining, Gukesh found himself leading his opponents by a narrow margin. To secure his win, he needed only a draw in his final game and for Caruana and Nepomniachtchi to also end their match in a draw. And that’s exactly what happened – Gukesh’s win solidified his position as India’s youngest ever grandmaster and set him up to be the youngest contender at the upcoming World Chess Championship.
