High schoolers gather with Colts and USA Swimming to talk about mental health in sports

150 local high school students in Indianapolis recently engaged in a thought-provoking conversation about mental health during an event called “Under the Surface.” Hosted by the Indianapolis Colts, USA Swimming, and Indiana Sports Corp, the event took place before the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials. The students had the opportunity to listen to a panel discussion featuring Olympic gold medalist Lilly King, U.S. swimmer Ashley Twichell, Colts cornerback Kenny Moore, and Colts Vice Chair and Owner Kalen Jackson.

During the panel discussion, Lilly King, an Indiana native, shared that she found it comforting to know that others, even those performing at the highest level, struggle with similar feelings. A student from Warren Central High School, Aileen Stockdale, was particularly moved by the event. She mentioned how eye-opening it was to see herself represented in the panelists and how mental health issues are not unique to high schoolers but also affect adults.

The students who participated in the event are part of Bring Change to Mind, a national organization with chapters in schools across Indiana. This organization aims to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental illnesses. Stockdale shared that she joined the organization to seek help in finding herself while also assisting others in their journey towards understanding and accepting their own mental health struggles.

Overall, “Under the Surface” was an inspiring event that brought together high school students from different backgrounds to discuss an important topic that affects many people’s lives. By listening to each other’s stories and experiences, these students gained a better understanding of mental health issues and were encouraged to seek help when needed.

In conclusion, this event was a great example of how organizations can bring together individuals from different walks of life to raise awareness about important issues such as mental health. It is crucial for everyone to understand that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but rather a step towards living a happier and more fulfilling life.
