In the early hours of Friday morning, two thieves broke into a currency exchange in the West Town neighborhood and stole an ATM machine. The incident took place in the 1500 block of West Division Street, and Chicago police were called to investigate a burglary. Upon arrival, they found broken glass from the front door of the business.
According to a witness, the offenders broke through the front door, removed the ATM machine from its location, loaded it onto a white van and fled the scene. This crime is just one example of a growing trend of ATM thefts in the area. In January, another currency exchange was targeted for its ATM when thieves drove a Jeep Cherokee through the front window near Roosevelt and Jefferson Street. Another currency exchange on the city’s near West Side was also recently hit with burglars breaking through the front glass door of the business to take the machine containing an unspecified amount of money. The owner mentioned that this has happened multiple times before but it is unclear if these burglaries are connected.
No one is currently in custody for this crime and Area 3 detectives are still investigating this incident.
