County commissioners support UTSA sports facility ‘Roadrunners NEST’ with investment

Bexar County commissioners recently approved a $5 million investment into the construction of a new sports facility at UTSA. The “Roadrunner NEST,” which stands for “Nurturing Elite Sports Talent,” will be built on the main campus starting in January 2025, with the City of San Antonio also investing an equal amount.

County Commissioner Grant Moody emphasized that the Roadrunner NEST will not only benefit UTSA but will be a valuable asset for the entire community. The facility, expected to cost $35 million and be completed by December 2026, will be accessible to residents and available for public use. It will host competitive events and youth sports, in addition to serving as the home for men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams at the university.

UTSA has committed to covering the facility’s annual operating costs of $500,000 once it is completed. With about half of UTSA’s students coming from Bexar County, the Roadrunner NEST is expected to be a hub for sports and athletics in the area. The joint investment by the county and city reflects a commitment to providing opportunities for the community to engage in sports and recreation activities.
