Germans Discuss Extending Work Hours and Retiring Later Amid Slow Economic Growth

In recent months, German politicians and business leaders have started to openly discuss a topic that was once considered taboo: the idea that their fellow citizens do not work enough. This is due in part to concerns about the country’s weak economy.

German Finance Minister Christian Lindner set off the debate by stating in March that other countries, such as Italy and France, work more than Germany. Economy Minister Robert Habeck, a member of the Green Party, also voiced his frustration over workers going on strike when the country is already facing labor shortages.

The comments made by these leaders reflect a growing sentiment among leaders that additional work hours and increased productivity are necessary to improve Germany’s economic situation. For example, train drivers were able to negotiate a shorter workweek of 35 hours instead of 38, without a reduction in pay. Deutsche Bank AG CEO Christian Sewing has also voiced his opposition to a four-day work week, urging Germans to work more and harder.

As the debate continues to unfold, it is clear that there are differing opinions on how to address the issue of work hours in Germany. Some believe that longer work weeks are essential to economic growth, while others argue for better work-life balance and quality of life for workers. Ultimately, finding a balance between these perspectives will be crucial in determining the future of work in Germany.
