IOCL chooses Lummus’ cumene technology

IndianOil Corp. Ltd (IOCL) has recently announced that they have chosen Lummus Technology’s cumene technology for a 440,000 tpy unit in Paradip, India. This new cumene unit is part of a larger petrochemical and polymers expansion project at IOCL’s complex in Paradip. The technology is expected to provide IOCL with lower energy costs, improved reliability, operational efficiency, and better product yield, ultimately helping them optimize their plant economics and support their growth initiatives.

Lummus Technology’s involvement in the project includes the technology license for cumene, basic design engineering, proprietary catalyst, site services, advisory services, and training. IOCL has previously licensed multiple Lummus technologies for various complexes across India, including naphtha cracker, INDMAX FCC, and polypropylene technologies. Lummus has been in partnership with Versalis to license cumene technologies since 2007. The cumene process uses liquid-phase alkylation technology with a proprietary zeolite catalyst, resulting in high cumene yield, ultra-high purity cumene product, and a long catalyst run length.
